Many of us have a fair amount of beauty products stuffed in our bathroom cabinets and overflowing into drawers and counters. Mine was no exception for most of my life. It’s no surprise the bathroom is also the second-largest area of waste in our homes, followed by the kitchen.

Six years ago, I got my beauty routine down to a minimum after moving to Australia. It’s one of my favorite parts of moving abroad, learning to live in a smaller space with fewer products. It was a struggle at first, but I’ve simplified it because this makes the start of my day much more uncomplicated. It’s crazy to look back now and see how many products I used to think I needed!

After downsizing from our large Texas home and landing inside a tiny terrace in Sydney, Australia, I found I could only leave out what I used daily when it came to beauty products. I soon realized that I didn’t need many of the products I had. In fact, I couldn’t even remember that I had them stored away after a while.

I find now that I like to look for a product that addresses exactly what I need. As I became more comfortable with my minimalist beauty routine, I began replacing products (as required) with more environmentally friendly alternatives when possible. It’s a work in progress — I’m not entirely zero waste in my bathroom. My husband and daughters are also encouraged by using only what we need and not impulse buying more products than what we actually need or will fit in our small bathroom spaces. Here is the bulk of what I currently use daily.
